The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
