The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
